Rumour has it that various trolley derbies have been held throughout the Nelson region as far back as the 1920s.
1960s and 1970s: The Jaycee Trolley Derbies
Although records are thin on the ground, we do know that there was a Jaycee derby held down Waverley Road in Richmond in the late 1960s and early '70s

2002 ~ Present: The Nelson Summer Festival
In 2002, the Festival director Annabel Norman bowed to pressure from Sam Laidlaw and the derby has been a fixture in the Nelson Summer Festival programme ever since
Help Digitise the Nelson Photo News 1960 - 1972
The Nelson Provincial Museum and the Nelson Public Libraries are currently investigating
the possibilities of conducting a collaborative project to digitise the first run of the
Nelson Photo News published between 1962 and 1972.
In order to make this project happen, they are applying for a grant
from DigitalNZ and they need your help!!!
